Why Abafundi?

A couple of weeks ago my colleague Rachel  and I sat hashing out our vision about how we want to incorporate more student agency and inquiry into our classrooms. We decided our learning environment needed a better name than grade 5 or grade 3. We wanted something that reflected what we were expecting of ourselves and the students, yet connected us. We looked up synonyms to several words but nothing seemed right. Then we came up with a fantastic idea. What if there was a word in Zulu that would work? So we asked around and found a word that was catchy and well frankly easy enough to say, with just the right meaning. Abafundi – Zulu for learners. Our vision may still be unclear, but we have a name that inspires us. Baby steps.
